I need to start off by saying that I am not a pasta expert. In fact, this was my first time attempting homemade pasta – which just goes to show that anyone can do it!! I used to always think that you had to have a special attachment or fancy machine, but really, it can be done by hand!
If you want to jump in and try making pasta yourself, here are some basic tips.
- The basic ingredients you will need for most pastas are flour, eggs, salt and water. There may be other ingredients, depending on the recipe, but most basic recipes only require a few ingredients.
- You will need sufficient counter space. Read through the recipe completely to make sure you have enough space to roll out your dough.
- You can use an electric mixer or food processor to mix most doughs, but I found that I liked to mix mine by hand so that I could feel when the dough came together.
- If you are rolling the dough completely by hand, I would suggest sticking with recipes for pastas such as pierogies or ravoili. The thinner the pasta needs to be, the harder it is to keep it consistant when you are rolling by hand. Not impossible, but harder!!
- Most importantly, have fun! Don’t expect perfection, but do expect a delicious meal at the end of it!!
