If you have ever had a slice of rye bread, you will recognize the distinct flavor or caraway. This very aromatic seed is used to enhance many different foods, as well as many other uses.

  • The caraway seed is native to Asia and Europe.  Holland is thought to be where it is mainly produced, although it is also grown in Europe, the United States and Russia.
  • Caraway is not only used as a spice in baking and cooking, but also as an herbal remedy.  A few remedies the seeds have been known to be used for are to cure stomach aches, to help increase the action of the kidneys, and to help cure bad breath.
  • Caraway is a popular spice to be used in sausages and pickling spices.
  • The oil from caraway seeds is also used to make perfumes, soaps and lotions.

Try something new!  How about Caraway Mashed Potatoes?
