I’ve always wondered about the origin of the caramel apple. Was someone stirring a pot of caramel and a careless passerby dropped an apple in? Or maybe someone was enjoying their lunch and set their caramel treats atop their apple, leaving them in the sun where they melted together to become the beloved treat we know now. Unfortunately, the origin is neither of the two. A man named Dan Walker is credited for developing the Caramel Apple in the 1950s. He worked for Kraft foods, who developed and sold those yummy little caramel treats. And although I couldn’t find any exciting documented story of how they came about, we do know that they began as a simple caramel covered apple on a stick. Nowadays you can find just about anything added on ranging from nuts, oreos and chocolate to caramel corn and rice krispies! One of my favorite flavors is a white chocolate covered caramel apple with cinnamon n’ sugar; “apple pie á la mode”. What kind is your favorite?
