in season: pears

October 14th, 2009 - by

Growing up, I have to admit that I was never a fan of pears.  But now that I’m older, I really enjoy them.  And now is the time of year that they are filling the shelves at your grocery store!

Did you know…

  • The longer pears ripen on the tree, the more mealy and grainy they become.  That is why it is better to buy less ripe pears and let them ripen on your counter at home!
  • 95% of all the pears sold in the US come from California, Oregon and Washington.
  • A fully ripe pear is best eaten raw, but when cooking with pears, you should use a pear that is slightly under-ripe.
  • There are thousands of varieties of pears, but most grocers only carry 3 varieties – the Bosc, Bartlett, and Anjou.

Here are a few suggestions to take full advantage of pear season!
