celebrate: earth day

Happy Earth Day!

I don’t know about you, but I just love this Earth!  I mean, really where would we be without it?

There are so many things we can do to help this planet of ours, so it is nice to have a whole day to remind us about all of the great proactive ways we can keep our Earth happy.

For us “foodies” there are many food re-lated ways we can help our Mother Earth:

  • Plant your own garden –  This is a great way to keep healthy fruits and vegetables on your families table, and it keeps down all the pollution from the big diesel trucks that have to drive around your fruit and vegetables to the grocery store.
  • Plant a fruit tree –  Planting a tree is a great way to contribute to the environment.  You get to reap the benefits of the oxygen that it will produce, as well as the lovely fresh fruit it will provide.
  • Make a grocery list and a weekly menu – So how does this help the environment?  By planning a weekly menu and doing one big grocery store shopping outing this will help to reduce emissions pollutions from your car, and save on using so much fuel for multiple trips to the grocery store. And, while you are at it, bring your own reusable bags to the grocery store and pass on plastic bags.
  • Forget the bottled water –  By buying a filter you can use a bpa-free water bottle to carry around with you when you are out and about and save the landfill from all those plastic water bottles.
  • Support locals – Supporting your local fruit/vegetable/meat stand is a great way to help the environment.  It will help the local economy as well as reduce packaging waste, [all the crates, boxes, stickers that go along with selling fruit in a large grocery store] and pollution from truck transportation.
  • Store recipes in an e file – I am constantly finding great recipes online.  I end up print them out to try at a later time, then losing the paper soon after.  By storing favorite recipes in an electronic file, you can help reduce paper waste.  And, best of all, you always know where to find the recipe again!  Just set your laptop on your counter and follow the recipe electronically.  No paper needed!
Well, I hope that I have given you a few ideas to think about!
Happy Earth Day!
xoxo,
caroline
