European-Style Yogurt + Parfaits

August 24th, 2010 - by

Today I am sharing my favorite way to enjoy yogurt (super easy…no cooking involved!) as well as my favorite brands of European-style yogurt.  Continue below for more details!

For some reason, here in the US we often drown out good flavor with junk like high-fructose corn syrup.  We just love to process, process, process.  Sadly, this doesn’t create a great yogurt.  It’s interesting to note that in France, the Yoplait and Dannon labels actually taste pretty decent as they are created with less processing.  However, both labels make entirely different yogurt over here for our sugary palettes.  Drat!

The good news is there are some great yogurts out there that are minimally processed and have that great tang that European yogurts are famous for–oh what I wouldn’t give to be in the yogurt aisle right now in a French grocery store.  You know the enormous wine aisles in California grocery stores?  Well, in France, the yogurt aisle is just as large!

For a budget-friendly yogurt, try Mountain High’s Original Style Vanilla.  It’s their best flavor and is the most versatile too.  My kids love, love this yogurt. One tub runs between $2.50 and $3. If you’re in the mood for something special, something rich, and something that will knock your socks off, try the Liberté from Quebec.  It’s amazing…even better than Greek yogurt.  The coconut is to-die-for, but I’ll be honest…every flavor from their line has been downright awesome.  These run about $1 per 6 oz. container.  Locally you can find Mountain High at just about any grocery store, but Harmons carries both MH and Liberté if you want to conduct your own taste test.

For a fantastic summer snack, layer good granola (here is a recipe I love), good-quality yogurt, fresh raspberries and fresh blueberries.  The combination of the crunch, creamy and fruity flavors is a real experience for the tastebuds :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the Liberte yogurt. I stock up every time the grocery store has it in stock. Coconut is wonderful, black cherry is like eating ice cream, and the lemon is so yummy! You can’t go wrong. You just have to remember to stir the yogurt first or you will find most of the fruit flavour on the bottom. My daughters also love their vanilla yogurt as well. I’m off to the fridge right now to pull out my container of black cherry…

As someone who lives on the Quebec/Ontario border, Liberte has been our little secret for quite a while, glad to see its getting distributed/noticed. I could eat the lemon yogurt all day (and look like a blimp! This is not low fat!). I serve it for dessert with almost anything –f ruit, simple cake Its far better than ice cream, IMO, and I love ice cream.
