recipe: sadie’s better brownies

August 4th, 2010 - by

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about food and fiction.  Well, since that post, I have been reading more fiction that involves food – and I just love it when recipes are included in these books!  For some reason, those recipes really bring the story to life for me.  I must really love food!

I love all of the suggestions you all gave for fun food related fiction, but I also ran across another series that starts with the book Lemon Tart by Josi S. Kilpack.  It’s considered a “cozy mystery”, so it’s not too deep, but it was entertaining.  And it had recipes.  And of course, while reading the part in the book where the main character makes brownies for a neighbor, I immediately got a craving for brownies.  Good thing the recipe was in the book!

These are called Sadie’s Better Brownies – and they are supposed to be the main characters best brownies.  I’ve made quite a few brownie recipes in my life, and I do have to say these came pretty close to perfection for me.  I’m a gooey, fudgy brownie lover – not a lover of cakey brownies, so I got exactly what I was looking for in this recipe.

Next time you are relaxing and reading your favorite foodie fiction, make up a batch of these brownies to enjoy while reading!

Sadies Better Brownies
from Lemon Tart by Josi S. Kilpack

24 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup unsalted butter
6 large eggs
2 cups granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup walnuts or pecans (optional)

Preheat the oven to 350F.  Grease a 9×13 pan.

Melt the chocolate chips and butter in a double boiler.  Remove from the heat and set aside to cool slightly.

In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs and sugar.  Mix the melted chocolate and vanilla into the egg mixture.  Add the flour, baking powder, salt and nuts and mix well.

Pour into the prepared pan and bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out with just a few moist crumbs.

Remove from the oven and let cool before cutting.

Makes 24 brownies

Looks like I need to start reading more food fiction. There definitely aren’t any brownie recipes in my pharmacy textbooks =) These look great!
