recipe: creamy meyer lemon crumb bars

January 25th, 2012 - by

A couple of years ago, we took a trip to Oregon to see some of my husband’s extended family. While we were there, at his aunt’s house, we discovered that she had a huge Meyer lemon tree. I knew what Meyer lemons were, but had never seen them locally and had never tried them before. I felt like we hit the jackpot that day! We went home with a big bag of the lemons, and it was a sad day when they were gone. Continue reading “recipe: creamy meyer lemon crumb bars” »

celebrate – football {buffalo style!}

January 18th, 2012 - by

When it comes to football, it’s no secret that I’m not really into the football, but I am totally into the food! In fact, most years, I wouldn’t even be able to tell you who is even playing in the Super Bowl. But you can bet that I’ll show up to the party for the food!! And when it comes to the food, for some reason, buffalo chicken pops out to me as the ideal football food.

So I thought it would be fun to bring you all kinds of different buffalo-chicken inspired foods, perfect for football night, or if you are already planning for the Super Bowl.  Here are 51 different ways to serve up Buffalo chicken – you’ll have plenty of inspiration here!

recipe: ham and bean soup

January 11th, 2012 - by

Last week, my husband brought home a ham that he was given at work.  I impressed myself by whipping up a ham dinner (without even going to the grocery store!) for dinner that night, but since we are a small family, I found myself with a whole lot of leftover ham.  And as much as I love a good ham sandwich, a girl can only eat so many ham sandwiches!!  In comes soup to the rescue!  This soup is so easy, and fast as well.  And you don’t need a ton of leftover ham to make it – you can easily buy a small ham or a ham steak at the grocery store.  I come across recipes that call for the ham bone a lot, but I wanted a recipe that you can make with just the leftover ham.  I don’t often have a full ham, but am often sent home with leftovers.  So this recipe is great for one of those occasions!

in season: tangerines

January 4th, 2012 - by

As much as I love the fresh produce of the summer, every year I eagerly await when the citrus hits the store shelves.  I love stocking up on clementines, oranges and tangerines.  It is so refreshing to enjoy fresh segments of in season citrus.  And there is one that I’ve been especially enjoying this year – the tangerines.

recipe: mini chickpea cakes

December 28th, 2011 - by

Every New Year’s Eve, my family gets together to bring in the new year. Instead of having a meal that night, we each contribute 1 or 2 appetizers, and we all just graze all night, enjoying the food, the company, and playing games. It’s a great way to bring in the new year!! I have been searching high and low for the appetizers I will be bringing this year, and I’ve been trying out several recipes, trying to find the best.

recipe: hot buttered spiced cider

December 21st, 2011 - by

Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions? It’s my mom’s birthday, so we always go out to breakfast for Christmas Eve morning. And then it has stared to become a tradition to all get together for cake that night, followed by going to see the city light display where my parents live. And this year, I just may have to add in having this Hot Buttered Spiced Cider ready for when we get home from the lights. Indulgent? Yes, but it is the holiday season! If you think the butter part is strange, you can definitely leave it out for a delicious spiced cider, but the butter does add a richness that you don’t get otherwise. But either way, it is a great way to warm up – especially if you drink it with family!

recipe: deluxe grilled cheese with bacon

December 14th, 2011 - by

You know that winter is truly setting in when you are watching the weather and the high is in the 30s.  (Brrrrr!!)  There’s really nothing to do but to bunker down inside, cuddle up in a warm blanket, and enjoy a dinner of warm soup and, of course, a warm sandwich to go along side that soup!

recipe: marshmallow peppermint sauce

December 7th, 2011 - by

One of my favorite holiday flavors is peppermint.  Unfortunately, my husband is not a peppermint fan, so I don’t usually make a lot of peppermint flavored treats.  But I guess one good thing about having a husband that is working away from home is that you get to make all of your favorites that you wouldn’t normally make!!

I’m a year-round ice cream girl, no matter what the temperature is outside!  So I thought I’d combine some of my favorite flavors and put them over ice cream.  This would be a perfect dessert for a family get together or a festive party.  This is a great way to celebrate the season!

recipe: no knead bread

November 30th, 2011 - by

I am so late to the party on this one.

Years ago, back when I first started blogging, a recipe spread like wildfire over just about every food blog. This recipe was for No-Knead Bread. Everyone was talking about it. Everyone was making it. But somehow, it has taken me this long to actually get my act together and make this recipe.

I don’t know why I waited so long. This is seriously so easy. Even if you are afraid of yeast, this is one that just about anyone can handle. And it takes very little hands on time, which is what we all need right now, with the craziness of the holidays all around us.

So if you are looking for a fresh loaf of bread to grace your dinner table on one of these crazy nights, give this No-Knead Bread a try. Trust me – you don’t want to wait years to try it out like I did!!
