how to: open a pomegranate
November 6th, 2009 - by JenWhile walking through the grocery store one day I saw a big box full of bright red pomegranates and little handouts with instructions on how to open a pomegranate. I’ve heard lots of different ways to get all the seeds out without getting juice all over the place including smacking it with a wooden spoon or simply peeling it and picking out the seeds one by one. The instructions given by POMwonderful.com are a lot easier and surprisingly quick. Follow them and you’ll have a bowl of tangy and crunchy pomegranate seeds in only a few minutes.
1. slice around the top of the pomegranate, then pull off the “lid”.
2. slice down along the sides of the pomegranate where the seed sections are separated, the part that looks like the white part of an orange.
3. pull sections apart and while immersing each section in water, loosen the seeds. The seeds will sink to the bottom while the white membrane will float to the top.
4. discard of any extra white “membrane” and strain seeds from water.
5. enjoy in salads, desserts, in pastas or alone.
